The treatment itself involves washing the skin thoroughly and degreasing it with ethanol or acetone. Phenol peel is applied on facial skin with a gauze pad or cosmetic sticks. Deep phenol peels applied onto the whole face can be performed under general or infiltration anaesthesia. Application of intravenous or oral fluids is recommended to reduce possible toxic cardiac complications caused by phenol. Administration of sedatives before the procedure is recommended, e.g. benzodiazepines, as well as of analgesics after the procedure - NSAIDs, tramadol.
