According to recommendations of the European and American phlebologists' forum, the radiofrequency thermoablation procedure is treated as the "gold standard" in the treatment of lower limb varicose veins.
Treatment of superficial vein stems with these procedures involves inserting a catheter, the tip of which emits a radiofrequency wave, inside the affected vein. Radiofrequency varicose vein treatment is carried out under local anaesthetic and ultrasound guidance. The heat released destroys and then closes the inefficient vein. All marks disappear within a few weeks.

FAQ

The procedure is performed as one-day surgery. The patient spends several hours at the clinic. Using ultrasound, the doctor inserts a thin catheter supplied with radiofrequency current through a small skin incision into the vessel. The radiofrequency wave emits heat into the vessel wall, causing it to shrink and close the vein passage. Once the vessel is closed, the blood flowing through it is automatically redirected to healthy veins. After the thermoablation procedure, a dressing is applied to the site of catheter insertion, and additionally the doctor may recommend the use of additional, assisted compression.

After the procedure, the patient usually returns to normal activities within one day, with minimal pain. The typical period of convalescence is only a few days. Within a few weeks after the surgery, the doctor may recommend regular rehabilitation, in the form of walking and refraining from intense exercise (e.g. lifting weights) or prolonged standing.
